Mosaic for Mental Health 2012

Artspa collaborated in an art event on our last session of last year. On one large sheet of paper we made our mark thoughout the day. Left to dry we then cut the sheet to fit onto squares for the Mosaic for Mental Health fundraiser that will take place at the Craig Gallery, Alderney Landing from October 11th to 28th. Rite of Passage

I usually create abstracts between series, it is cathartic; a creative booster and palette cleanser. Strangely, I have not exhibited many of my abstracts, probably because they are more personal and not easily decipherable. I suppose I am known for my florals, horizons and more representational artwork. Abstracts are emancipating. I really enjoy experimenting with different mediums, composition and colour to elucidate the moment of creation.

My favourite abstracts artists include Otto Donald Rogers, László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee, Hans Hoffman, Anne Ryan and Jane Frank.

Every Thing Has Its Time - Andrea Pottyondy - Saint John Arts Centre

August 19th - October 22nd, 2011

This exhibit features mostly abandoned homes in rural and city settings in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. They are not just dilapidated empty structures but receptacles that contain history of place, and narratives of family that we can only imagine.

Subconsciously I was provoked into painting this series during the time that my parents had to sell and move from their home of over fifty years (my childhood home). At the same time our daughters were leaving our home to attend university so I was experiencing “empty nest” syndrome!

Through this artwork I hope to convey a sense of nostalgia and passage of time. The song that Pete Seeger adapted from Ecclesiastes 3:1-18;NRSV is the mantra of this series:

What a great time we all had. Here are some photos of artists in action! The fog kept rolling in so by noon we packed up and headed for a wonderful lunch at the Lobster Pound and then visits to galleries as well as a special visit with Bob Hainstock. He was gracious and full of art knowledge that he easily dispensed for our eager ears! Judy and Bob have a great studio overlooking the valley.

The Hub Gallery

Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) and the Hub are both pleased to announce their inaugural collaboration: The Hub Gallery.

The Hub Gallery’s premiere exhibition will take place from October 16^th to December 17^th, 2010. This premiere exhibition features visual artists Qahtan Ibrahim, Judith Leidl, Justine Kerr, Barbara Carter, Andrea Pottyondy, Charlotte Reinhold and Derrick Dale Johnson.

The Hub Gallery will serve as an exhibition space for VANS members twice a year. The Hub serves as an ideal exhibition space with its vibrant minimalism of clean lines, classic design elements, flexibility and collaborative spirit; the art work of VANS members will compliment the space and mandate of the Hub, as well as add a diverse punch of colour, disciplines and thematic frameworks evident in VANS’s membership.

Catherine McMillen 1927-2010

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of a wonderful friend and fellow member of Artspa.

I would like to say a few words about Catherine McMillen the artist.

I met Catherine about ten years ago when I joined the 14th Palette Art Group. We connected right away. She was graceful and ageless in the way you are ageless when you decide how old you are inside…what I call your soul age. Hers was young. She loved art, especially creating it and made wonderful mixed media art pieces, layering her artwork with papers, (even recycled coffee filters!) and acrylic paint to create wonderful abstracted landscapes and seascapes. These artworks have a spiritual connectedness to the earth, sea and sky.

When we started an artists afternoon group at the Fall River Rec Centre Catherine was more than happy to sign up. She actually gave us the name “Artspa” when she said “making art is better than a day at the spa”! But more than that she touched everyone at Artspa with her love, patience and kindness. She was a true artist. We will all miss you Catherine and know that you will be creating masterpieces in heaven.
